December 11, 2023 – Ontario, Canada
In a significant move to address the challenges international students face in Canada, Ontario Student Voices enthusiastically supports the recent announcement by the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), regarding the temporary extension of the International Student Work Hour Pilot.
Starting January 1, 2024, the waiver on the 20-hour-per-week limit for off-campus work, initially set to expire at the end of 2023, will be extended until April 30, 2024. This extension, as endorsed by Ontario Student Voices, allows international students the flexibility to work more than 20 hours off-campus while class is in session, providing a crucial lifeline for many facing financial challenges.
We commend Minister Marc Miller for recognizing international students' financial challenges and taking decisive action to alleviate some of their burdens. The extension of off-campus work hours is a testament to the collective advocacy of student associations, including CASA, and the government's commitment to supporting the well-being of international students.
The temporary extension is a positive step that acknowledges the immediate concerns of international students regarding the cost of living crisis in Canada. Ontario Student Voices echoes CASA's sentiments in expressing gratitude for this interim solution, recognizing its impact on the well-being of international students across the country.
As discussions around a permanent solution continue, Ontario Student Voices looks forward to supporting our partners who are in ongoing dialogue with IRCC, to ensure that the needs of international students are adequately addressed in developing a comprehensive policy.
Ontario Student Voices remains committed to championing the rights and well-being of international students and extends its appreciation to all student advocates for their tireless efforts in achieving this positive outcome.
