Dear Minister Bethlenfalvy,
Ontario Student Voices is pleased to participate in Ontario’s budget consultation process. This year’s consultation comes at a pivotal time, as Ontario faces the urgent need to invest in the skilled workers of tomorrow and secure the province’s economic future amidst inflation, affordability challenges, and changes to the post-secondary sector. Budget 2025 must prioritize comprehensive investments in skilled workers. While the government has made strides in funding training programs, further action is required to support the individuals
who will drive these industries forward. This means going beyond program funding to ensure students themselves are empowered to succeed. Programs are only as effective as the people who can access and thrive in them. Without the means to support themselves—financially, mentally, and otherwise—students are unable to fully realize their potential, and the system
risks failure.
To achieve this, we need policies that address the holistic development of post- secondary students. These policies must ensure students are prepared to enter the workforce without the burden of crippling debt, hindered by affordability challenges, or struggling with mental health. A strong, resilient workforce begins with well- supported students.
Representing 125,000 students across the province, Ontario Student Voices has conducted extensive consultations to identify four actionable policies that, if implemented, will immediately strengthen Ontario’s students, workforce and economic
future.
We look forward to working with the Government of Ontario to build a robust post-secondary education system, cultivate a highly adaptable workforce, and drive a prosperous economy.
Sincerely,
Alex Oestreicher
Chair, Ontario Student Voices
