OSV Congratulates the PC Party of Ontario on Re-Election

March 19th, 2025

WELLAND, ON – Ontario Student Voices congratulates Premier Doug Ford on his swearing-in and extends best wishes to his cabinet as they begin their new mandate. As the collective voice of Ontario's college and polytechnic students, the organization acknowledges the significance of this moment and the opportunity to collaborate in strengthening education, affordability, and student success.

Ontario Student Voices appreciates the Premier's commitment to economic growth, skills development, and ensuring Ontario remains a leader in education and innovation. As the government sets its new priorities, Ontario Student Voices urges the government to commit to ensuring that post-secondary education in Ontario is affordable, supportive, and sustainable.

The financial sustainability of Ontario’s colleges and polytechnics is critical; with years of underfunding now manifesting in program cuts, staff layoffs, and campus closures—directly impacting students. These challenges threaten both the quality and accessibility of post-secondary education across the province.

To address this crisis, Ontario Student Voices urges the provincial government to implement stable, long-term funding solutions. Key recommendations include a 10% increase in operating grants, funding adjustments to keep pace with inflation, and ensuring institutions have the resources necessary to maintain high-quality education, support staff, and prevent further cuts. Additionally, expanding financial aid, establishing a fair tuition framework for international students and eliminating interest on student loans will equip graduates with the financial stability needed to enter the workforce, contribute to the economy, and drive long-term growth.

“Ontario’s College and Polytechnic students have been clear: they need greater support to succeed. As institutions grapple with inadequate funding, students are bearing the consequences. The provincial government must take action by investing in its post-secondary education system to secure and support Ontario’s future workforce,” said Alex Oestreicher, Chair of Ontario Student Voices.

Ontario Student Voices looks forward to working collaboratively with the Premier, his government and other stakeholder to ensure students across Ontario have the support, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive academically and professionally. Ontario Student Voices calls on the provincial government to take immediate action to strengthen post-secondary education by increasing funding, expanding financial aid, and ensuring institutions can continue providing high-quality learning experiences.
